My main gig is as a social justice journalist writing for major newspapers and online publications. I’m also an experienced radio journalist.

But, there are lots of ways you can work with me. So feel free to contact me to discuss my availability, rates and how I can help you with your project, or via my agent for any speaking engagements.

Writing, radio & TV

I have 16 years experience as a radio, print, TV and online journalist. I regularly write investigative articles, produce tape syncs, and make podcasts, radio segments and documentaries.

Media interviews

I regularly get asked to comment in the media about topics I have expertise in. This is not an activity I charge for. If you have a media request, please get in touch!

Public speaking

For me, public speaking is a joy and I’ve received great feedback on my talks. Topics which I have expertise include:

  • How to deal with the media – especially if you have suffered trauma or come from a marginalised cohort.
  • A day in the life of an extreme journalist: How to take big risks, empathise with a stranger and ask the questions no one else will.
  • What I’ve learned from some of the most marginalised and hidden people in our community.
  • Women and careers – resilience, workplace flexibility, discrimination at work, communication and assertiveness, female leadership.
  • Internet trolling: what it’s like to be trolled, who trolls and what they want. Cybersecurity, social media self defense and how it affects businesses and their employees.
  • Experiencing and recovering from postnatal depression.

Keynote Speech – upclose and personal with predator trolls

Why would you send someone you’ve never met a death threat? What happens when one of those threats lead to real-life consequences like terrorism and murder? And what does this have to do with your workplace?

In 2013, I became the victim of online trolling. It left me shaken and afraid but also intrigued about the motivation behind these sustained, virulent attacks. My curiosity led to the best-selling book Troll Hunting, which sold out on its day of release and has immediately been reprinted. It was also named non-fiction book of the month in February by Angus and Robertson and Booktopia. Meticulously researched, Troll Hunting draws on conversations with psychologists, trolling victims, law enforcement, academics and, most importantly, trolls themselves, to explore the criminals behind and the real- life consequences of this uniquely 21st Century phenomenon. Since the release of this book, I have been increasingly in demand as a keynote speaker about cyberhate – and what to do about it.

My compelling keynote speech, based on the material in my best-selling book, covers:

  • Why people behave differently online to in real life
  • The psychology of trolls
  • Should you respond? The advice “don’t feed the trolls” isn’t always correct
  • Is it illegal? When to report trolling to the police/authorities
  • How the way you think and respond to trolls can help protect you when you receive hateful messages
  • Why you need real-life support networks if you’re a cyberhate target
  • Why this is an OH&S issue for employers and how you can be part of the solution
  • Where to get help if you need it

Pro bono and charity work

I do a lot of pro bono and charity work, especially in areas related to social justice – which is close to my heart! Consequently, my pro bono commitments are often full up.

However, I do have special charity and non-profit rates for public speaking and MCing if your organisation falls into that category.

Teaching and mentoring

I have tutored in journalism subjects at the University of Canberra since 2010 and love passing my skills on.

I can help you crank up your work as a freelance journalist and need mentoring or just some sound advice about getting your work published, contact me about my rates.
